MOTIVATING STUGGLING READERS

We will be focusing on increasing motivation in recreational choice reading and enchancing the home-school connection in order to increase reading motivation and achievement among struggling students in grades 1-8. Lauren teaches remedial reading courses to kids in grades 6-7-8 and would like to find ways to create a community of readers amongst them. Suzie teaches 7th grade language arts and facilitates the accelerated reader program at her school and is largely interested in building students' reading endurace. Deb is an instructional coach for grades K-5 and realizes that motivation is a very important component of learning.

I really appreciate this focus, since my own experience with college students has taught me that middle school is THE critical time when reading changes from joyful fun to work adn when students disengage from their own literacy development. I look forward to learning with you!
